EVLC Students Rock Canada Blooms

The EVLC program brought home an award for Outstanding Educational Garden at this year's Canada Blooms garden show. The students designed a "Nature Based Playspace" which included a Wildlife Village, Animal Hopscotch, Reading Area and Viewing Platform. As well as the above award, the design was also a finalist for the Evergreen Brickworks S.E.E.D. (Society, Environment, Education, Design) Award. Well done!

Bringing Habitat on Campus

On Saturday, March 26 (Earth Hour day) graduating students from the Environmental Management Technician Program at Newnham volunteered their time to construct and repair bird boxes for the campus bird monitoring program. Supported by Faculty, administration and the Outdoor Centre, the students have been responsible for tagging, mapping, and repairing over 75 boxes on campus. The EMT students were part of a pilot course that allowed them to fulfill their traditional in-class environmental science class requirement with hands-on study using King as a living lab.

ECE Students Get Out and Dirty!

Kevin French from the Outdoor Centre has been facilitating workshops for ECE students from Newnham and King. Students are learning how to enrich the day care experience by taking the children outside. Some of the activities/topics they have undertaken include: how to build mystery and intrigue into a program, why a greenhouse and gardens are so effective, designing an "Eco-Pack" and painting in the "Green Scene". Poster Sessions on King Campus as a Living Laboratory

On Wednesday, April 13, students from NAT260 (Environmental Science) will be hosting a poster session in the Connection Café from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm dedicated to highlighting King Campus as a living laboratory. They invite all members of the Seneca community to join them in learning more about our unique campus.

King Open Forum on Sustainability

EcoLinks 2011

From April 28-30, King Campus will be the venue for EcoLinks 2011, the annual conference of the Ontario Society for Environmental Educators (OSEE). This year, Carmen Schlamb (environmental faculty) and Larry White (academic chair) will be presenting a session entitled Breaking the Circle of One: Finding Support for Sustainability in Your Institution.

EVLC and Tallgrass Ontario

The EVLC program is currently working on a Tallgrass Ontario project to develop a Tallgrass Prairie and Savannah Ecosystem on campus. The project will include prepping an area, growing the species, planting, maintaining and monitoring. Tallgrass Ontario will be providing signage for the project to educate about biodiversity and the importance of a tallgrass prairie ecosystem. For more information please contact Jane Davey.

Remembrance Day 2010

In addition to our annual outdoor ceremony, King Campus observed Remembrance Day with a speaker event arranged by SSW. Students listened to the stories of a holocaust survivor and a Korean war veteran prior to moving outside to observe the Remembrance Day ceremony. Readings were performed by Recreation Council members while a piper played. Thanks to all who attended and participated, especially to SSW and Recreation Council members who organized these important events.

Mental Health Awareness Day

On December 2nd, The SSW Mental Health class (pictured in the photo on the left) hosted the first King Campus Mental Health Awareness Day. The well attended event offered participants free food, prizes, henna tattoos, live performances and mental health related information booths. Guest speakers discussed managing anxiety and available community services.

The event raised $1,744.00 for the York Centre for Children, Youth & Families, and the Canadian Mental Health Association. Money was raised through a raffle and silent auction. Winners of the top raffle prizes included Gord Imrie who won an iPad and SSW student, Victoria, who won an iPod Touch. Thank you to students and faculty who worked to bring us this event and make it such a huge success.

We are pleased to welcome two new members to the King Campus community.

Larry White: Chair, School of Public Safety, Underwater Skills, Recreation and Environmental Studies with the Faculty of Applied Arts and Health Sciences. Larry comes to us from Algonquin College where he was the Academic Manager for the School of Part-time Studies. Larry also has extensive experience working with First Nations communities in the Western Arctic, Northern Saskatchewan and Eastern Ontario / Western Quebec.

Julie McGuigan: Academic Advisor. Julie has worked for Seneca for six years and comes to us from Student Services at Newnham and Markham campuses. Julie also teaches a course in Flight Services in the Tourism program at Markham.

Salvation Army

It's time to start collecting items for our annual campus Family Sponsorship program with the Salvation Army. This year there is a shortage of toy donations for children, most specifically babies, toddlers, and teens from 14-17 years old.

If you would like to contribute please bring your unwrapped items to the donation box in Michelle Hutt's office.

Thank you for making the effort to participate, the Salvation Army is very grateful of our ongoing generosity.

Canadian Blood Services

Canadian Blood Services would like to thank those who participated for their support in hosting, coordinating and promoting the blood drive at King Campus on Monday, November 1st. A total of 68 donors attended the clinic resulting in the collection of 36 units of blood. This amount can save or improve the lives of up to 108 people. Thank you to all the blood donors, your contribution is tremendously valuable.

The Learning Centre's New Tutors

The Learning Centre provides FREE tutoring for general and program-specific courses. The Learning Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm and Fridays from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm and is located within the Library.

Films On Demand

Seneca Libraries now offers Films On Demand, a streaming video collection of educational films covering a broad range of subjects and supporting programs such as Police Foundations, Nursing, Social Work, Early Childhood Education, and many more. Videos are available as Flash Video streams, but Windows Media and QuickTime formats are also available for most titles. If you have questions please drop by the library or contact Information Services Librarian, Manda Plavsa.

Extended Library Hours

One Book, One Campus

The One Book One Campus event, featuring Giller Prize winning author, Joseph Boyden, took place on October 7th in Pod C. The successful event was attended by an engaged audience of two hundred students and faculty who listened to Mr. Boyden read from his Giller Prize winning book, Through Black Spruce. The reading was followed by a question and answer session and book signing by the author. The success of this event was due to the generous sponsorship of the First Nations@Seneca. A free pizza lunch was provided by the Seneca Student Federation and the King Recreation Council. A big thank you to everyone who contributed their time and support.

The One Book, One Campus event is back! This year Joseph Boyden will be reading from his Scotiabank Giller Prize winning book, Through Black Spruce. Golf Tournament

The 2nd Annual King Classic Golf Tournament was held at Rolling Hills Golf Course on Monday, August 31st. A beautiful hot sunny day for the golfers and "gofers" who enjoyed a friendly round of golf. The winning team (after a 4 hole tie-breaker) was President David Agnew, Nycole Harding, John Russell and Cynthia Mckeich. The most honest team (the "gofers"), were the Library crew of Autumn Piette, Ken Wu, Julie Cain and Kathryn Klages. Raffle tickets were sold at the event for a number of generously donated prizes. The $700 raised will be donated to Student Bursaries and Awards and Canadian Crime Victims Foundation.

Therapeutic Recreation Applied Degree

September 2010 marked the launch of a new applied degree at King Campus. The Applied Degree in Therapeutic Recreation focuses on therapeutic activities, addictions, counseling, wellness, physiology, community development, psychology, and more. There are 6 different streams that students can choose from: addictions, community development, mental health, physical rehabilitation, wellness, and an interdisciplinary stream.

Well, have we got something for you! Seneca libraries now offers a new audiobook collection. The collection primarily consists of current popular fiction and includes some classics. You can download digital audiobooks in wma and mp3 formats (these are compatible with ipods and can be burned to CD). To access titles you must first download and install the OverDrive Media Console . This free software allows you to check out and download audiobooks to your preferred listening device. If you have any questions, require assistance, or just want to provide some feedback please stop by the King Library.

Excellence in Seneca Awards

The Excellence in Seneca Awards recognize individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the College. This year's recipients include Sue Miller, Office Assistant, Counselling and Disability Services at King Campus. Sue has been an outstanding contributor to the Seneca community for more than 38 years. Sue takes the time necessary to ensure that each student has his or her needs met and receives helpful information. Sue has also greatly impacted those with whom she works. As a resource and valuable team member, Sue has contributed to the smooth operation of her department, including going above and beyond the call of duty to provide training, support and knowledge during times of transition.

She applied for the position two and a half years ago and was in Vancouver overseeing events such as the ice dancing gold medal win by Canadians, Virtue and Moir. Haiti Relief Event

The student organized fundraiser, which took place on Thursday, January 21st, was a wild success. The campus raised $5132.27 which will be matched by the Seneca Student Federation. This new figure of $10,264.54 will then be matched again by the government for a donation of over $20,500! The day featured a culturally themed fashion show and very big auction. First Peoples Film Series

Notice something different when you walk into the library? Look to the right as you step inside the doors and you'll see that we have moved the reference desk. In our continued effort to improve library services, we have rearranged the position of our reference desk to make the service more approachable and accessible to faculty and students. You'll notice we've flanked the desk with two of the library's comfiest chairs. So comfortable in fact, it's like being at home in your own living room! You must come by for a sit-down, we'll answer your questions and solve problems in cozy comfort.

The Living Library was a Huge Success!

The King Campus Career Living Library took place on November 17th and was a phenomenal success. "Readers" had the opportunity to sign out "books" who are leaders in career areas of interest to King students. "Books" included David Agnew , President of Seneca College, Armand La Barge, Chief of York Region Police, Josh Hook, Guitarist in Tokyo Police Club, Anne Menzie, Operations Manager, Cambridge Central Ambulance Communications Centre, and many more. Feedback from both "readers" and "books" was overwhelmingly positive. As a result Seneca libraries is hoping to expand the event to other campuses in the future. Thank you to everyone who participated, organized, and helped to make this a successful event.

The King campus library is proud to present Canada's first career-themed Living Library! In the living library, the books are people and one "reads" them by interviewing them for a "loan period" of half an hour. The idea is to provide a unique learning experience and professional development by giving our students and faculty an opportunity to meet and interview successful people of interest.

Fun and engaging, the game is designed to teach students about library services and policies. Did you know that you can set up an e-mail alert to notify you when the latest issue of your favourite publication has been added to a database?

To figure out if Seneca Libraries subscribe to a publication and which database it can be accessed through, first search the journal title finder. Once you have identified the database, follow the instructions located here. Instructions are straight-forward and usually consist of only a few short steps.

Barbara Muir on Oprah!

Canadian portrait artist, Seneca faculty member, and blogger Barbara Muir is being interviewed by Oprah! Barbara has recently received media attention for creating drawings using Skype. Her unique use of the communication software caught the attention of Oprah who will be interviewing Barbara via Skype for her show. Wildlife at King

Look up, WAY UP! Our resident ospreys Ernest and Ruby have once again made the arduous journey from the south back to King Campus. Their little heads can be seen peaking out of their nest high above the student parking lot and yesterday they were very active with dragging sticks into the nest and fishing in the channel.

Also back in town are our wild pair of Trumpeter Swans seen circling the lake yesterday to finally rest in the lagoon. Keep watch for future cygnets!

King Campus Clean-Up

On April 13th student volunteers in the Exploring Environmental
Relationships course came out to help clean-up the campus, particularly the wetlands where garbage accumulation over the winter can pose a dangerous threat to young waterfowl. Students found empty antifreeze jugs, plastic bags, lighters, cell phones, cans, water bottles and construction material in the wetlands, enough to fill 11 garbage bags. Thanks to the students of EVLC, Recreation, GCT, Nursing and General Arts & Sciences for all their help.

King Library Staff tie for first place in the 2009 Canucks Run Amok Challenge!

King Library staff tied for first place with Westmount Public Library's team in the race across Canada. It took the King Superstars just under five weeks to beat the other 31 teams and cover the distance between St. John's and Vancouver. Congratulations Superstars!

Sustainability Expo

Monday, April 6 - Sustainability Expo: As part of the Research @ Seneca event, students from NAT111 - Exploring Environmental Relationships - will be holding a poster session geared towards research around sustainability. Students will be in Pod C from 8:15-10:40 and from 12:35-3:15 to greet visitors to the expo and to answer questions about their applied research projects. All staff, faculty and students are welcome to drop by. From 11:00-12:30 speakers will be talking about research opportunities at Seneca and Carmen Schlamb will be presenting her research project "Everybody Counts! Students as Citizen Scientists" presented at the 2008 AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) conference in Raleigh, NC.

All staff, faculty and students are invited to participate in the campus clean-up day for the environment. We need a lot of volunteers to help walk the trails and remove the garbage that has accumulated over the winter. Please come by the Garriock foyer on the day of the event to collect your gloves, garbage bags and map route.

The Moraine for Life Community Well-being Symposium 2009: Exploring Innovations in Stewardship, Livelihoods & Learning

Universities and Colleges Moraine Coalition

On April 22 Seneca King will sit down with researchers from Queen's University, Trent University, University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo to consider forming a Universities and Colleges Moraine Coalition dedicated to gathering information about current and past research on the moraine and to compile a comprehensive list of moraine-focused researchers. King's 700-acre living laboratory makes it an ideal location for moraine-based research.

Staff vs. Students Volleyball Game

On Friday, March 20th, as part of Wellness Week, King staff squared off against students in four games of volleyball. Although students won the majority of games, staff did come away with one win. A fun time was had by all. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported the game.

Food Pantry for Students

An emergency service is now available for students in need. The Food Pantry provides one meal package for a day for students. There is also a limited supply of canned goods. The Food Pantry is located in the King Library. Please direct students in need to the Reference desk in the library. This is a partnership of the Seneca Student Federation (SSF), the Learning Centre and the King Library.
